Avocado me Pink

During lockdown in March 2020 I started researching natural dyeing techniques. Under lockdown we were also subjected to limited resources and I looked to my food for colouring agents. Red cabbage, beetroot, avocados, rosemary and spices were a few options I explored. Beetroot being a obvious choice which was very disappointing as the vibrant pink washed out completely. The avocado however, was a winner and a lasting shade of pink was achieved.

Which fabric should you use?

I used a unbleached 100% cotton calico seed cloth, this fabric looks authentic with its imperfect finish and grain. In order to make a material absorbent you need to treat it to a vinegar bath and a normal washing cycle, this helps manipulate the fabric and breakdown any barrier layers.

Which part of the avocado can you use?

The skins and pips of the avocado hold the colour. Scrape out all the green fleshy parts and leave to dry out, once you have gathered enough you can cook in water. I use my slow-cooker as I can safely leave it to stew for 48hrs. to deepen your shade of pink you can add bicarbonate of soda. Also, fresh oxygen oxidizes the avocado and sets the dye nicely.

Does the dye wash out?

I place my soaked fabric directly into the washing machine to wash straightaway to ensure no surprises and enjoy the finished result after drying in the tumble dryer.

What can you make with the dyed fabric?

I make the most wonderful interior decor, Avo slipcover for your scatter pillows with cotton ties to give you that real relaxed authentic look.

Table clothes, throws and bed linen are a few more examples to come.

I will continue to grow with new batches and dyeing techniques, bringing you fresh products and ideas for your  home, looking forward to our ongoing relationship and discovery together.

Thank you for your time and appreciation.

Kind regards
