Candle Care

Candles are so cool, everyone loves lighting them, watching them flicker and then blowing them out!

They provide us with light, atmosphere and aroma.

Candles are made of a vessel, wax, wicks, fragrances and colours.  All of these elements have many varieties, so I’m going to share with you how I choose what to work with and how.

Vessel- Glass, concrete or ceramic; as I prefer to pour candles.

Wax –Soy wax is made from soy beans which is a hydrogenated form of soybean oil. Soy wax is natural and sustainable as we can plant more soy beans.

Wicks- Cotton or wood secured to the vessel with a hot glue gun.

Fragrances- Essential oils or fragrance blends; personally I don’t like sweet aromas and prefer musky and earthy smells.

Colours- Fun to add colour to enhance the appearance of the fragrance.

When it comes to making candles, having the correct hardware is key and being precise on measurements too.

You will need a small pot to melt wax inside another pot filled with water. A gram kitchen scale and a thermometer that you can put into the wax to read its temperature. Glue guns are handy to secure your wicks.

Once your candle is complete you will need to acquire some knowledge on how to care for your candle.

Candle Care- Trimming of your wicks is important to avoid a large flame which can burn to hot making a well in your candle and can also cause black soot.

The first burn of your candle is going to determine the memory of your candle, so I try to ensure an even melt of the top of my candle before I extinguish the flame.

Correcting bad memories of candles, place tinfoil around your candle to help the wax melt evenly again, like creating a small oven. Once all wax has melted nicely, remove the foil.
